What sand works for an arena
The top layer of a riding arena is usually washed fine or medium sand without clay or dust. Dust rises when horses work, and clay makes the surface slippery after rain and hard in drought.
Our sand is 0/4 mm, with more than 85 % of the mass in grains of 0.25 to 1 mm. Fines (below 0.063 mm) are 0.4 % and the sand equivalent SE4 is 90, which means very little clay.
How much sand you need
A 20 x 40 m arena is 800 m2. A 10 cm layer is 80 m3 of sand, which at a loose bulk density of 1.59 t/m3 is about 127 tonnes, and about 144 tonnes once compacted (1.80 t/m3). Use our sand calculator for your own numbers.
Sand is only the top layer: below it you need a stable, free-draining base. Plan the build-up with an arena contractor; we supply the sand and the grading results.
For larger orders
We sell in bulk, by the tonne, for equestrian centres, arena contractors and municipalities. Price: PLN 30 per tonne net below 1,000 t, PLN 27 per tonne from 1,000 t, loading at the pit included. The buyer arranges transport.
Outside Poland this makes sense for larger volumes shipped by sea from Gdansk. You are welcome to visit the pit and see the sand.
Questions and answers
Is this quartz sand?
We do not claim a mineral composition, because we have no chemical analysis. For an arena, grading, low dust and no clay matter most.
Will the sand be dusty?
Fines are 0.4 %, which is very low. Dust also depends on surface moisture and maintenance.
Is it certified for children's sandpits?
No. We have no hygiene certificate for play sand, so we do not sell it as certified play sand.
